{ How to buy fabric and plan projects: PART I / Comment choisir vos tissus et planifier vos projets: Partie I}

mardi 13 mai 2014

First of all thank you for your lovely comments on my Red Knight Hoodie and Julia Sweaters!
Today I want to talk about fabric.
How do you buy fabric? Do you buy on a whim, or do you plan your projects ahead? Do you keep your stash low or is your studio full to the brim?
I am quite in between: when I started sewing I would buy every single print I loved or saw on sewer's blogs.
But I have come to a reasonnable plan and today I would like to share with you my tips about buying fabrics and planning projects.

Alors aujourd'hui parlons tissus

Here is what is on my shelf right now: my newest acquisitions:

Where I buy : Où j'achète les tissus:

I buy online , but I am also lucky to be part of some secret project that allows me to have received 2 of these prints as a present and I could not be happier!!
When I buy online I basically buy from France : Cousette
and from the US : Hawthorne Threads.
I shop locally for lining, some fabric and other notions. But I know that the fabric I get from these online shops are better quality and I am happy with their shipping rates, speed and customer services.

For my quilting projects: I usually buy fatquarter bundles of the same collection. It makes life easy when you want to match and mix fabrics.
For other projects: I would buy at least 1 yard of a print but 2 if I love it wand want to use it for sewing something for myself.
But the most efficient way of buying remains planning ahead my projects and buying fabrics accordingly.

Planning: choose patterns & Combine patterns and fabric/

Planning projects : Why!!?? Because otherwise you will end up buying every single print you like and your bank manager will not be happy at all!!

Planning is a way to keep your stash reasonnably low and to buy with a purpose !
Make a list of the projects you want to sew for yourself and others and prioritize.
Using this kind of book also helps keeping track of your projects and deciding which one will come first. It is also helpful to keep notes on yuour projects and choose your fabric:

When I chose and bought these fabrics I also decided what I would use them for: the Stepford Dress and the Bernadette jacket. Two easy to wear but elegant garments, can be casual or chic. My style!!

 Pourquoi s'organiser?

#1
Bye Bye Birdie in blush chez Cousette
Tissu bleu chez Cousette
I chose these 2 prints to make the Stepford dress that is part of the The sewing Rabbit  pattern membership: I chose the lower band (blue) and main fabric at the same time using the method shown above (copy-paste in Word).

Left /gauche:  The Stepford dress : photo and pattern by The sewing Rabbit

Why I chose those: They are contrasting but have the white in common.
The peachy pink suits me well ; I have earrings to prove it!!:) and other garments I made or bought in the same shade that suit me well.
The prints are easy to wear, but still unusual/trendy/graphic.

Beware! fashionable colors might not be part of your palette! Here is a very helpful post from Colette's blog that helps you define your own color palette.

I chose this fabric because I want to make this jacket by République du chiffon: I need a jacket, never made one and this one looks easy enough for me!!:)
I will pair this print with some gold lining.
It is cotton. It is unusual print but the colors are neutrals and will be perfect for a jacket ( neutrals are used on the example in the patern photo).

7 Tips on choosing fabrics & planning projects: Conseils pour choisir vos tissus& planifier vos projets:

1/ Choose carefully according to the type of fabric:

2/ Check width of fabric before you decide on the lentgh you want to buy / faites attention aussi à la largeur du tissu indiquée

4/ Create files in your computer to organize your patterns: kids/ me/ to do.../ or use a notebook /dans votre ordinateur créer des fichiers pour organiser vos patron

5/ Choose a pattern and buy according to pattern recommendations/ avant d'acheter choisissez le patron et acheter en fonction des indications du patron.

6/ If you must pair prints for a project : copy and paste in Word images of the fabrics  and  check if patterns and colors would mix well. Here is an example of options of combinations of fabrics for my Cargo Duffle bags:

7/ Always wash, dry and iron fabric as soon as you buy it. It will be ready for cutting and sewing!/ Laver, sécher et repasser votre tissu dès sa récpetion ou son achat.
Please do share your tips on buying fabric and planning projects !I would love to hear!

  2. This is a great post about organizing. Do you have any tips on how to un-stash all the fabrics I've bought in the last 6 years? I got hooked on buying fabric on clearance thinking I was going to use it sooner or later. It's now much, much later.

    1. Hi Eska and thanks for visiting. I would say that making a quilt would be a great idea! wuilts don't have to be slow and tedious! I made a giant star quilt and it is very easy and fast. http://lescrapdesoph.blogspot.fr/2013/09/retro-giant-star-quilt.html
zippered pouches are also a great way to use scraps.

    A Binetôt

  7. i think you are right and not right: you're right regarding prints. there are so many beautiful prints out there and (as much as I would like to) I can't buy all of them. so i should rather buy some that i will certainly use. however there are other fabrics that are worth buying without having a special project in mind: polka dots, stripes, stars and of course fabrics with just one colour. i often sew shirts for my children with a fun kid print. but they would be too much with the print all-over them. however paired with one of these other fabrics, they are great. that's why some weeks ago, i went pretty crazy: I was on a fabric sale and on the fabric market in munich and bougth 30m of knit fabric (just two of them were prints and alltogether it only cost me 130 euros). it's a lot, but i finally have fabrics for combination with other prints... btw: it's so fun that whichever blog post of someone else i want to comment on, you already commented ;) guess we like similar things. also, i too started lauren's course this week. maybe we can discuss some things some time. sending you love from cold rainy germany...

I am so glad you started the course. I have not had time to really start it yet, I am really waiting for this summer. In the meanwhile I am drawing little things...! Yes we must have the same tastes!! a good thing! maybe you are my german twin!!:)
