{ CARGO DUFFLE SEW ALONG : FINALE!! assemble and line your bag }

dimanche 16 mars 2014

YAY!!!!! this is the finale, dear friends!!
Well done to those of you who made it that far!!
Now,  you are ready to assemble and finish your bag:)

I encourage you to go and check it out before you start!

TIPS FOR ASSEMBLING/
ASTUCES POUR ASSEMBLER LE SAC

1. Use a walking foot/ utiliser un pied type pied à quilter
It creates a nice look on the outside
3. Mark a dot 1/2 " away from each corners on front and back/ Marquer un repère à 1/2 pouce des coins du devant et derrière
4. Assemble top and bottom before assembling sides (very important!!)
5. Before assembling the sides make sure your bottom gusset is balanced on the sides:

6. Set your machine on a small stitch length to enhance durability of bag: I used 1.8
 7. Go slow
8. Use matching threads!
9. Clip corners
10. Finish seams with zigzag stitch or bind (see what Anna says about that!)

Oh !! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!You are done!!!
Congratulations!!

TIPS FOR LINING YOUR BAG/
DOUBLER LE SAC
now if you are feeling a bit more adventurous here are a few tips for lining:

2. I added pockets using the pattern I used for my Perfect Tote Bag, pattern by Oh! Fransson

4. I stitched the lining with inside of the bag OUT: lining right side up: it was easier like that:

5. GO VERY SLOWLY for a professional result
6. Use your walking foot / utiliser le pied à quilter
7. I used 2 different colored threads to match my lining and my outer bag.

I added this cute label I got for free in this month's issue of "Love Patchwork &quilting".
And I added contrasting thread for edgestitching,as well as a contrasting zipper.

I handstitched the lining to the 4 corners / J'ai cousu à la main les finissions des soufflets et les attaches aux 4 coins du sac pour que la doublure ne tombe pas:

Well!! I am very happy with this bag! It is very cheerful and perfect for spring!
I do hope my Mama will be happy with it!

{ CARGO DUFFLE SEW ALONG: PART 5 : making gussets and handles }

vendredi 14 mars 2014

 Welcome back to
the Cargo duffle Sew along !

Are you ready to make gussets and handles??

Let’s do it!
so read carefully the pattern as well as Anna's post.
for today's part , I am just giving you some tips

I apologize in advance for the changes of font in this post: for some reason blogger would not let me choose my font this thime!! arghhhhhh!
1. Make the zipper gusset:
  • I like to attach one part at a time to my zipper, because it is a heavy kind of zipper and it tends to move when you sew.
  •  So I place it on my canvas and stitch a raw of basting stitches (longest stitch on your machine) as close as possible to the edge:
  • Then I place my cotton on top, right side down:
  •  tip: make sure the pattern will go the right direction
  • now add batting and quilt.

2. Make the handles: coudre les anses:
  • sew, as indicated, main and accent fabrics along one long side / coudre le long des deux pièces
  •  press well
  • then fold both pieces towards seam / press well/ plier chaque pièce vers la couture:
  •   I added the strip of canvas at this point to strengthen handles / ajouter un morceau de toile pour renforcer:une bande de 1 pouce 1/2
  •  Then fold again / bring accent fabric on top of main , leaving a bit of main on each side/ pin well:
  • ramener le morceau le moins large sur l'autre en laissant dépasser sur les côtés le tissu principal:
  •  top stitch/ surpiquez (j'aime coudre 6 lignes de surpiqures pour un look pro!)
  • I like to add 6 lines of topstiching: it looks more professional:
Well!! you are done with this part!!
well done!

Look! This is what I see when I enter my sewing room in the morning!! Where is my bag?? underneath the huge cat!!

Next time we will assemble the bag!
and then all we will have to do is line it if desired!

Allez la prochaine fois: on assemble le sac!! prêtes!!
on se revoit mercredi!?

SO!!! see you next wednesday!

hugs

{ Oh look: a finished table runner! }

mercredi 12 mars 2014

I made it! I finally finished my First Flight table runner
I am so busy with kids being home reight now and preparing my Cargo Duffle Sew Along that I had little time left for anything else!!:)

I am really happy about and I promise the photos don't do it justice!!

The back is really nice too and the chevron quilting show off really well:
Le dos:

It looks good on my kitchen table:
Il va très bien sur la table de la cuisine:

but it looks great too on the coffee table in the living room, beside our VERY red sofa :
Mais il va mieux au salon à côté de notre très rouge canapé:

I love the mix of linen and Cloud 9 farbrics, so soft!

tissus/ fabrics: Essex Linen in Black / Cloud 9 Bark&branch
chez Hawthorne Threads

Remember: I made a Easy Flying Geese tutorial here: if ever you want to make this kind of table runner for your home!

well, must rush,  I can hear the "maaaaaaaaaaaaaama" that means "we need you right now mum!"

talk to you later

{ CARGO DUFFLE SEW ALONG PART 4: QUILTING AND ADDING POCKETS }

lundi 10 mars 2014

Welcome back to
the Cargo duffle Sew along !

I hope you are up for our
Part 4 today:
quilting and attaching pockets to front part

Let’s do it!  so read carefully the pattern as well as Anna's post.
I am taking you step by step through the process:
 read before you start!!:)

Step 2: assemble exterior: pages 4 and 5!
Wow : getting there ladies!!

  • let's start by quilting front part:

Quick reminder for those who are new to quilting:

You will need :
- a walking foot

- Quilting pins

- And /or some spray glue

For best results:

- Tape canvas to flat surface

- place batting on top, smooth well with hands

- place quilting cotton on top (right side up) : I like to iron layers together.

You can spray a bit of glue before adding each part of the sandwich:

At the end I like to add pins to avoid fabrics from shifting:

Choose threads depending on the color of fabric:

  • Now quilt your front and back with straight lines:
Tip: always go in the same direction: don’t turn around at the end : stop, cut thread and start on the same side you strated your first line.

Leave 3.5" unquilted at the bottom: this is the place you will add your bottom accent piece. We will quilt it later.

When you are finished:
I like to add a raw of edgestitches to prevent my threads from pulling out: stitch at 1/8" from edges

I used a white thread in the bobbin but this is a bit useless as I plan to lone my bag!!:)

Trim to size: 11.5”tall x 19” wide:

It can happen that your batting is smaller than canvas and cotton: it is alright as we have ½” seam allowances when we will assemble the bag.

  • You are ready to place your pockets on top of front exterior!
The aim is to place raw edge of pockets 3.5" away front bottom edge  and at the same time to  center your pockets: the center of pockets should be about 9.5" from each edge but this can vary.

You can either draw a line with Hera Marker or erasable pencil or use rulers as I do.

So use a small ruler to insure that you have the same measurement on each side of pockets.

Make sure raw edge of pockets is DOWN and stitched edge is UP!

Pin well , not opening completely the sides so the edge does not move away from its original place:

Stitch exactly on the line of stitches you already have: go slow.

Do the same for the center: you should end up with something like that:

  •  Now add pockets flap:
trace a line 3/4" away from top of pockets.

Iron raw edge of flaps in and place the fold on the line you just marked / stitch

DON'T FORGET TO CUT RAW EDGES 1/4" AWAY FROM SEAM otherwise it will be visible when you open flaps (and that is pretty ugly!!)

so now you have something nice like that when you open flaps!!

 stitch on top of flaps:

Hooray!!! DONE!!

Now all you have to to is add the bottom accent: this one must be cut to the exact measurments: 4.5”x 19”

Quilt again!

I like to add a raw of edgestitche to the bottom too for a nicer finish.

ET VOILA!!!!!

 WOW!!

Repeat for the back but without adding pockets!! of course!
And while you are at it, go ahead and quilt bottom gusset piece.

This was a bit long wasn't it??!! quilting always is!

I hope you found this part helpful. Please do ask any questions you may have, here, on the flickr group or on my FB page.

Don't forget to add your photos to our flickr group.
