Today we are going to  :

make the pockets  and pockets flaps

Go to page 3 of the pattern and start making the pockets:

here are a few tips I can share with you today:

•  I always start by choosing coordinated thread for my fabric:I use them for assembling and quilting:
• Choisissez vos fils: ils vous serviront à assembler et à matelasser:

•  To mark the pleats I use a Hera marker, but you can also use a water soluble pen. I like to use a Hera Marker , because all it leaves is a crease on the fabric: no need to wash!
• marquer le centre au fer; puis à l'aide d'une règle et d'un outil de marquage marquez 1 ligne à 1.5 pouce, de chaque côté du centre et 2 autres lignes à 1.5 pouces des bords.
• Amenez les deux marques centrales sur le pli central et les deux autres sur les bords:
• Pour marquer vous pouvez utiliser un Hera Marker , qui ne fait que plisser le tissu ou un stylo à encre effaçable à l'eau: 

• mark the center by pressing well and then use the pleat as a starting point to mark your other pleats:

•  press well after folding.
• marquez bien tous ces plis au fer:

• Pin very well to give the right shape and insure that the measurements are right:I like to use the same clips I use for quilting: it holds all the layers  in place quite well (yes!! they look like hari clips!!) .

• Make sure your pocket is the right width: approx: 11.5 "

• épinglez et vérifiez que votre poche mesure 11.5 pouces de long:

I am crazy about pinning!!

•  Edgestitch on the pleats you have marked :
• Surpiquez sur le pli (là où vous aviez tracé votre marque, à 1.5 pouce du bord) :

 Edgestitching along fold

• YAY!! we are now on page 4 of the pattern!!:) let's make a cup of tea!!! Now we are going to make the pockets flaps: 

• This is how I make the pockets flap: I actually draw the stitching line 1/2 " away from edges and then I draw my curve: I made a little curve on this one using a pool.

•   Then I stitch right on the lines I have drawn. It is the best way for me to get a nice curve.

• Bravo! nous en sommes maintenant à la page 4 du patron!! Wouhou! 
•  Nous allons faire les rabats des poches:mon système D pour obtenir un joli arrondi: tracer la ligne de couture à 0.5 pouce du bord et tracer l'arrondi dessus: ensuite lorsque je couds, je couds SUR cette ligne.Et voilà!!
• pensez à surpiquez 2 lignes autour des bords.

•  Don't forget to clip curves.

 Please ignore VERY ugly cutting mat!!

and this is wrong: the raw edges of the pockets should be down, not up like on this photo!!

However raw edge of flaps should be up, like on photo

• Check that pockets flaps fit nicely on the pockets.

Now you should have some gorgeous pockets!!

{ CARGO DUFFLE SEW ALONG : PART II : cutting fabric / coupez les tissus }

Hi ladies!
(the part in orange is the part for my french speaking readers/ les parties en orange sont pour mes amis francophones. ) 

I am so happy many of you joined me for this sew along!

As some of you seem to be very motivated, I decided to post Part II today, so we can all get started!

If you have chosen your fabrics you are ready to cut.

But before I start:

Merci aux françaises qui me rejoignent pour ce sew along. 

Comme j'ai remarqué que certaines étaient très motivées, je vous propose de ne pas attendre le week-end pour couper nos tissus et nous préparer à coudre.
Pour commencer: bonne nouvelle: le patron vient d'être amélioré par Anna et il est maintenant disponible dans sa nouvelle version ici. 

Pour ce patron vous devez couper et compter en pouces. Convertir en centimètres serait très compliqué. 

 Quelques éléments de traduction:
A. front/back = tissu principal; devant / derrière
B. bottom gusset= soufflet bas
C. Zipper gusset= même tissu que devant/ derrière placé autour de la fermeture éclair
D. exterior bottom accent = extérieur bas
E. front pockets = devant des poches
F. Pockets flaps = rabats des poches
G. handles = anses
H. binding = biais 

Batting= molleton
canvas = toile 
 lining= doublure des poches (pour moi c'est le même tissu que les poches) 
Interfacing = Vlieseline 


# Pour A, B et C : vous devez couper 1 pouce de plus que ce qui est indiqué dans le tableau  car le matelassage va réduire la taille des tissus. Nous recouperons tout à la bonne taille après. 
# Pour A, B et C: vous devez aussi couper: molleton et toile en plus du tissu 

Pour couper: 
J'utilise un tapis de découpe Kési'art à 2 côtés: l'un des côtés est en pouces. 

- pliez le tissu et assemblez les deux côtés lisières ensemble. 
- placez le pli central sur une ligne du tapis
- placez-y aussi votre règle, alignez les repères de la règle sur le pli, tout en alignant le côté droit sur une ligne verticale.
- coupez la petite bande qui n'est pas toujours très droite 
- commencez à compter (vers la gauche) , replacez votre règle et coupez.

• CUTTING: 

For a start and for the few beginner sewers that follow this sew along (I know there are some, hello!!) here is a few things you need to know to insure accurate cutting:

- always match-up selvage edges
- press fabric.
- fold your fabric and place it on your cutting mat.
- Place the fold on top
- place selvages down.
- Line up  ruler + center fold + straight line on the mat:
- cutting fabric is squaring-up the fabric edges before you start hacking-off strips or squares: cut a tiny piece of fabric before you start to have a straight edge to start with.

 

- Then count the number of inches you need (count twice!) and cut, holding firmly your ruler with your left hand (if you are right handed ) . 

(I know there are other ways of cutting fabric, but this is what works for me. Feel free to use your own method.)

• LABELLING:

Here is what my sheet looks like after cutting:

As you can see it is busy with my funnyhand writting: 
before cutting, I always start by labelling each piece with a letter on the pattern.

Then I punch out pieces of paper that will be pinned on the fabric to create little stacks of each part of the bag.

And when I have cut, I check the item off my list!

As you can see on this photo, for piece A I have pinned together quilting cotton, batting and canvas. By doing this, I won't waste time searching for my pieces,when it will be time to sew and quilt !

 

 En français: 

- Avant de couper, sur ma feuille j'attribue une lettre à chaque partie du sac. 

- Je coupe des bouts de papiers, y note les lettres et j'épingle ces repères sur mes tissus. Tous les tissus et molleton coupés pour une partie du sac sont ainsi épinglés et étiquetés ensemble. 

Ainsi, lorsque je commence à coudre, je n'ai pas à chercher. 

- De plus , dès que j'ai coupé une partie, je coche la case correspondante.  

- cette méthode permet de gagner du temps. 

 

 5 TIPS FOR CUTTING 

YOUR CARGO DUFFLE FABRIC:

1. LABEL your pieces as soon as you have cut them.

2. Keep all the different pieces in stack , labelled: for example for Front / back you should have quilting cotton/ batting and canvas in one stack, labbeled.

3. Check pieces off the list as soon as you have cut them.

4. Use a cutting mat and rotary cutter.

5. Don't forget to add at least 1" to the measurements for pieces A, B, C: we will trim down to initial measurements after quilting.

This is the lovely stack of fabrics I had after cutting. Love that it is so easy to use now! 


Now we are ready to quilt the different pieces and sew the pockets.

{ CARGO DUFFLE SEW ALONG: PART I: choosing fabrics / choisir les tissus }

 

 Hello and welcome to the CARGO DUFFLE SEW ALONG!!

I am so glad you are here!

Beware: bilingual post ahead; therefore VERY long post ahead!!

For a start : go and download the pattern file:

 Anna has updated the pattern and the new version should be soon available.

Now let's see what we NEED!!

 Fabric Requirements:

+ Requirements based on 44” wide fabric. 

 my comments and tips have been added in bold

 • 1 yard exterior main  

• 3/4 yard bottom accent/bottom gusset
• 3/4 yard pockets/flaps/handle accent   

handle accent is the fabric that will be in the middle of the handle

 • 1/4 yard handle main 

that is the fabric that is under the handle accent: it is larger than the accent

• 1 yard cotton canvas

• 1/2 yard cotton batting (90” wide) : 

 I use my usual quilting batting but I know that special bag batting can be found: it is thicker

• 1/4 yard interior binding (made into 1/2” double fold straight grain binding) :

 This is used to cover the seams inside if ever you don't line your bag

• 1/2 yard medium weight fusible interfacing for pockets/flap (Pellon SF101)

I would also use that on the handle to make them stronger

• 26” Coats & Clark Coverall Zipper (or any closed end zipper 26” long)

• 4 Dritz brand snaps (size 24) 

I could not find any where I live so my bag does not have them!!

On my bag: main handle is yellow and Accent Handle is grey 

• Lining: if you are planning to line your bag : 1 3/4 yard of lining fabric 

Notions: 

You will need a walking foot and quilting needle as well as coordinated threads for quilting.

Il est en anglais mais je traduirai la plupart des instructions et mes photos ajoutées à celles du patron devraient vous suffire!

Le matériel: 

Alors voilà une illustration des différentes parties du sac:

le côté sera appelé "soufflet" 

Sur le patron les dimensions sont données en inches (pouces) et franchement,  j'ai appris à coudre avec des inches:  je trouve ça beaucoup plus simple.

J'utilise beaucoup ce convertisseur de mesures

La plupart des mètres de couturière sont en centimètres d'un côté et en inches (pouces)  de l'autre!

Mais pour vous aider voilà ce qu'il vous faudra en centimètres:

 • 1 yard (92 cms ) de  tissu extérieur principal

• 3/4 yard (70 cms ) pour le soufflet bas et extérieur bas (lin gris sur mon sac)

• 3/4 yard  ( 70 cms) pour les poches ; rabats de poches et éventuellement pour le tissu des anses 

• 1/4 yard ( 25 cms) pour le tissu principal de la anse (en jaune sur ma photo) 

 c'est le tissu le plus large de la anse

• 1 yard (92 cms) de toile : ce tissu doit être épais pour donner du corps au sac (pensez tissu d'ameublement)

• 1/2 yard (45 cm) de molleton coton

Il existe aussi du molleton spécial sac mais j'ai utilisé mon molleton pour quilt

• 1/4 yard (25 cms) de tissus pour couvrir les coutures intérieures: c'est un biais de 2 cms de large

Je me propose de doubler le sac: si vous le faites vous n'aurez pas besoin de coudre ce biais.

• 1/2 yard ( 45 cms) de vlieseline pour renforcer les poches et éventuellement les anses

•Une fermeture éclair de 70 cms (type fermeture de blouson)

• 4 fermetures aimantées à mettre sur les poches (pas sur ma première version) 

• Pour la doublure: si vous avez l'intention de doubler votre sac: 1 m 60 de tissu

Les petits plus:

Il vous faudra un pied à quilter pour pouvoir matelasser les épaisseurs entre elles et une aiguille 90 si possible pour passer à travers les épaisseurs.

Il vous faudra aussi du fil coordonné pour matelasser.

Choosing fabric/ choisir les tissus:

- For exterior fabrics: choose quilting fabrics or linen. You can also choose canvas.

-  I usually start with the main exterior fabric. 

Then I choose the bottom and pockets.
Je commence en général par choisir le tissu principal.

- For the handles  : I use the bottom fabric and pockets fabrics and play around with them. Or you can choose a fourth fabric and use it just for the handles., as I did on my cloud bag.
 Pour les anses: je choisis une combinaison du tissu du bas et de celui des poches. Mais on peut aussi en ajouter un nouveau pour une petite touche perso, comme sur mon sac nuages.

 - It is nice if you can see and touch the fabric but if I can't (as I buy a lot on the internet) here is how I do :
I open a Word document: I go to my fav shop, copy the image of the fabric and paste it on my word document . I do that with my 3 main fabrics to see how they would look together.
 Here are some examples of combinations I made (images of fabric from Hawthorne Threads):

- Il est préférable de pouvoir choisir les tissus "en vrai" mais quand , comme moi, on habite le bout du monde, on va sur Internet et on choisit sur image. Voilà comment je procède pour être sûre de choisir la bonne combinaison de  couleurs:
 j'ouvre un nouveau doc sous Word. Je copie l'image du tissu et la colle en petit format. Je fais de même pour les 3 tissus principaux. Sur le fond blanc, on voit très bien les teintes; voici 2 exemples (les tissus viennent de chez Hawthorne Threads). 

 - My mum wants a bag for her yoga lessons: she spotted this Savannah in Coral in the Hawthorne Threads shop . 
I chose the pockets fabric from the same collection, then searched for the perfect linen to go with them: I chose this Essex Linen in Olive.
- Ma maman chérie, veut un sac pour ses cours de yoga  : elle a craqué pour ce tissu fleuri: j'ai donc cherché dans la boutique en ligne des tissus coordonnés: pour ce faire j'ai utilisé ma méthode du copié-collé dans Word.

- I am also planning to make a bag for my girl:
She is 7, she loves horses so: here is the combination I came up with: the 3 fabrics on the left come from the same collection (Wee Wander) . 
I added the strippy fabric on the right for my main handle.  (Dear Stella Sunburst Stripe in Wheat) . I will use some of the bottom accent for the handle accent .

- Pour ma fille de 7 ans , passionnée d'équitation , j'ai choisi cette combinaison de tissus, notamment grâce à cet outil qui se trouve sur beaucoup de boutiques en ligne : il suffit de cliquer sur "find coordinates by colors" 

I found the cream handle main using this cool tool in the shop :most shops have somthing similar:

Ok now: you have 1 week to go and find the perfect combination of fabrics!! GO!GO ! GO!
