I have never made a handbag that I could use daily.
But I could not resist anymore making the Compass Bag by Noodlehead . I know I can trust her for making the best bag patterns ever! and this one does not disappoint. Everything falls into place perfectly, she gives great trips too. And all in all it is a pretty easy sew.
The only hard part was to find the proper hardware in France.


Voici ma version du Compass bag de Noodlehead. Un patron en anglais de très bonne qualité comme tous les patrons de cette créatrice. Le plus dur n'a pas été de coudre le sac mais de trouver les bons anneaux, crochets, ... J'ai eu du mal à trouver une boutique qui ait tout ce qu'il me fallait.
Si vous êtes en France et que vous connaissez une bonne boutique en ligne pour le matériel de fabrication des sacs , je suis preneuse!

 For the fabrics I chose some Les Fleurs Canvas and some Essex Yarn Dyed in Nautical for the pockets and the lining for more sturdiness.

  The lining is also made out of Essex Yarn Dyed. I did not include the zipper pocket but I am really proud to have installed this magnet closure!

 I chose the long adaptable straps.

 I have already adopted this bag and got lots of compliments for it!
On my computer I saved the photos under "compass bag #1" because I know there will be more versions of this pattern!

While I am back to work... I have scheduled this little post ..
Just a few projects I have not shared yet: two christmas presents I made last minute in december.

{ I made a shirt! A Mulberry tunic for my boy }

 People!!! I made a shirt! I sewed button holes !:) even though it is a kid's shirt I am still proud of myself!!
Well, actually, my sewing machine sewed the button holes and I almost kissed it when I realize how easy it was!!:)

J'ai cousu une chemise! je n'en reviens pas! j'ai cousu des boutonnières!! enfin, ma machine les a cousues! et j'en étais tellement contente que je l'ai embrassée!!

I used the Mulberry tunic pattern by  Kid Approved for Willow&Co. 
I cut a size 4 for my 4 1/2 boy and the fit is PERFECT. 

This tunic makes me so happy!

 I love this pattern and I think it is so well written: I love the finishing touches: the topstitching and the seams inside the garments are well finished thanks to the details in the pattern:

I used Carolyn Friedlander's Botanics Collection bought from Hawthorne Threads a while ago.
I first bought the whole collection in 1/2 yards in order to make a quilt but it turns out I am using those prints for garments: I used them for my Knight hoodies' hoods and know for this tunic.

The prints resemble scribbles and doodling, perfect for this summer's Kids Clothes Week theme, don't you think?

J'ai utilisé des tissus de la collection Botanics de Carolyn Fieldlander achetés chez Hawthorne Threads. Les tissus rappellent des crayonnages, ils sont parfaits pour le thème de cette saison de Kids Clothes Week: KID ART!

There really are 5 buttons on the front but he didn't want to button up the last one: "Boys don't wear the last button!!" So he says!!... OH BOYS!!

Oh well! I was scared of shirts and now I am not!! I am ready to embrace the whole shirt thing!! give me shirt patterns!! I am ready!!

Alors voilà!! je n'aurais plus jamais peur des boutonnières! alors à moi les patrons de chemises pour enfants, hommes et femmes!!!!

{ CARGO DUFFLE SEW ALONG: PART I: choosing fabrics / choisir les tissus }

 

 Hello and welcome to the CARGO DUFFLE SEW ALONG!!

I am so glad you are here!

Beware: bilingual post ahead; therefore VERY long post ahead!!

Now let's see what we NEED!!

 Fabric Requirements:

+ Requirements based on 44” wide fabric. 

 my comments and tips have been added in bold

 • 1 yard exterior main  

• 3/4 yard bottom accent/bottom gusset
• 3/4 yard pockets/flaps/handle accent   

handle accent is the fabric that will be in the middle of the handle

 • 1/4 yard handle main 

that is the fabric that is under the handle accent: it is larger than the accent

• 1 yard cotton canvas

• 1/2 yard cotton batting (90” wide) : 

 I use my usual quilting batting but I know that special bag batting can be found: it is thicker

• 1/4 yard interior binding (made into 1/2” double fold straight grain binding) :

 This is used to cover the seams inside if ever you don't line your bag

• 1/2 yard medium weight fusible interfacing for pockets/flap (Pellon SF101)

I would also use that on the handle to make them stronger

• 26” Coats & Clark Coverall Zipper (or any closed end zipper 26” long)

• 4 Dritz brand snaps (size 24) 

I could not find any where I live so my bag does not have them!!

On my bag: main handle is yellow and Accent Handle is grey 

• Lining: if you are planning to line your bag : 1 3/4 yard of lining fabric 

Notions: 

You will need a walking foot and quilting needle as well as coordinated threads for quilting.

Il est en anglais mais je traduirai la plupart des instructions et mes photos ajoutées à celles du patron devraient vous suffire!

Le matériel: 

Alors voilà une illustration des différentes parties du sac:

le côté sera appelé "soufflet" 

Sur le patron les dimensions sont données en inches (pouces) et franchement,  j'ai appris à coudre avec des inches:  je trouve ça beaucoup plus simple.

J'utilise beaucoup ce convertisseur de mesures

La plupart des mètres de couturière sont en centimètres d'un côté et en inches (pouces)  de l'autre!

Mais pour vous aider voilà ce qu'il vous faudra en centimètres:

 • 1 yard (92 cms ) de  tissu extérieur principal

• 3/4 yard (70 cms ) pour le soufflet bas et extérieur bas (lin gris sur mon sac)

• 3/4 yard  ( 70 cms) pour les poches ; rabats de poches et éventuellement pour le tissu des anses 

• 1/4 yard ( 25 cms) pour le tissu principal de la anse (en jaune sur ma photo) 

 c'est le tissu le plus large de la anse

• 1 yard (92 cms) de toile : ce tissu doit être épais pour donner du corps au sac (pensez tissu d'ameublement)

• 1/2 yard (45 cm) de molleton coton

Il existe aussi du molleton spécial sac mais j'ai utilisé mon molleton pour quilt

• 1/4 yard (25 cms) de tissus pour couvrir les coutures intérieures: c'est un biais de 2 cms de large

Je me propose de doubler le sac: si vous le faites vous n'aurez pas besoin de coudre ce biais.

• 1/2 yard ( 45 cms) de vlieseline pour renforcer les poches et éventuellement les anses

•Une fermeture éclair de 70 cms (type fermeture de blouson)

• 4 fermetures aimantées à mettre sur les poches (pas sur ma première version) 

• Pour la doublure: si vous avez l'intention de doubler votre sac: 1 m 60 de tissu

Les petits plus:

Il vous faudra un pied à quilter pour pouvoir matelasser les épaisseurs entre elles et une aiguille 90 si possible pour passer à travers les épaisseurs.

Il vous faudra aussi du fil coordonné pour matelasser.

Choosing fabric/ choisir les tissus:

- For exterior fabrics: choose quilting fabrics or linen. You can also choose canvas.

-  I usually start with the main exterior fabric. 

Then I choose the bottom and pockets.
Je commence en général par choisir le tissu principal.

- For the handles  : I use the bottom fabric and pockets fabrics and play around with them. Or you can choose a fourth fabric and use it just for the handles., as I did on my cloud bag.
 Pour les anses: je choisis une combinaison du tissu du bas et de celui des poches. Mais on peut aussi en ajouter un nouveau pour une petite touche perso, comme sur mon sac nuages.

 - It is nice if you can see and touch the fabric but if I can't (as I buy a lot on the internet) here is how I do :
I open a Word document: I go to my fav shop, copy the image of the fabric and paste it on my word document . I do that with my 3 main fabrics to see how they would look together.
 Here are some examples of combinations I made (images of fabric from Hawthorne Threads):

- Il est préférable de pouvoir choisir les tissus "en vrai" mais quand , comme moi, on habite le bout du monde, on va sur Internet et on choisit sur image. Voilà comment je procède pour être sûre de choisir la bonne combinaison de  couleurs:
 j'ouvre un nouveau doc sous Word. Je copie l'image du tissu et la colle en petit format. Je fais de même pour les 3 tissus principaux. Sur le fond blanc, on voit très bien les teintes; voici 2 exemples (les tissus viennent de chez Hawthorne Threads). 

 - My mum wants a bag for her yoga lessons: she spotted this Savannah in Coral in the Hawthorne Threads shop . 
I chose the pockets fabric from the same collection, then searched for the perfect linen to go with them: I chose this Essex Linen in Olive.
- Ma maman chérie, veut un sac pour ses cours de yoga  : elle a craqué pour ce tissu fleuri: j'ai donc cherché dans la boutique en ligne des tissus coordonnés: pour ce faire j'ai utilisé ma méthode du copié-collé dans Word.

- I am also planning to make a bag for my girl:
She is 7, she loves horses so: here is the combination I came up with: the 3 fabrics on the left come from the same collection (Wee Wander) . 
I added the strippy fabric on the right for my main handle.  (Dear Stella Sunburst Stripe in Wheat) . I will use some of the bottom accent for the handle accent .

- Pour ma fille de 7 ans , passionnée d'équitation , j'ai choisi cette combinaison de tissus, notamment grâce à cet outil qui se trouve sur beaucoup de boutiques en ligne : il suffit de cliquer sur "find coordinates by colors"

{ First Flight Table runner top finished and easy flying geese tutorial (bilingual) }

 I have just finished this table runner top.
 I have ordered some batting and should get it soon!
I used Cloud9 Bark and Branch collection and mixed it with my favorite Robert Kaufman Essex Linen in Black.

Voici le top d'un nouveau chemin de table pour mon salon:
je suis tombée amoureuse de ces tissus Cloud9 Bark and Branch: (déjà utilisés pour mon Sac Cargo Duffle) 

Je me suis amusée à créer mon propre motif, sans patron.
J'ai cousu des lots de 4 unités et les ai associées à des unités contenant du lin gris foncé (Robert Kaufman Essex Linen in Black) et j'ai ensuite jonglé et assemblé selon mon goût! 
C'était comme designer une page de scrap! aussi fun à vrai dire!!
Le plaisir de créer quelque chose d'unique et de personnel!

I made my first flying geese units for this table runner and loved how versatile this block is.

I played with colors and patterns and it was a bit like scrapbooking: I did not follow any pattern but just let my imagination do the job!
 

Right at the end I added the red flying geese just for a touch of fun, to add something unique and personal.

I can't wait to quilt and finish this one!!

 Flying geese tutorial

If you want to make 4 flying geese at once here is a step by step process:

• cut 1 square : 8" x 8" from main fabric
• cut 4 squares 4 1/4" from second fabric

 finished size (sewn)  of unit: 6.5"x3.75"

pour coudre 4 unités à la fois!!

note: je mesure toujours en pouces parce que j'ai appris à coudre sur les sites et livres américains: cependant je trouve que ce système permet de travailler avec des nombres entiers :

 j'ai donc investi dans un tapis de découpe à 2 côtés et dans une grande règle en pouces!!

• coupez 1 grand carré : ici 8 pouces (20.2) mais vous pouvez faire plus petit ou plus grand
• coupez 4 petits carrés : la moitié de la longueur du grand carré + 1/4 de pouces (6mm): donc ici 4 1/4 de pouces 
• quand elles sont cousues chacune de mes unités fait 6.5 pouces (16.5 cm)  par 3.75 pouces (9.5)

• draw a line on small squares along the diagonal:
• dessinez une ligne sur la diagonale de chaque petit carré à l'aide d'un stylo effaçable ou d'un crayon de papier

•  place 2 small squares right sides together on corners of 8" square , pin:
• placez 2 petits carrés sur 2 angles du grand carré endroit contre endroit, et épinglez : les deux petits carrés se chevauchent:

•  stitch 1/4 inch away on both sides of line:
• coudre à 1/4 de pouces (6mm) de le ligne tracée, et de chaque côté de cette ligne:

• trim along the line to obtain 2 units:
• coupez le long de la ligne pour obtenir 2 unités:

• you now have 2 units:

•  press open towards small triangles:
• repassez pour ouvrir en mettant les marges de coutures sous les petits triangles:

•  place a 4 1/4 square right side together on  remaining corner of each unit, right sides together . Pin. Stitch on both sides of line/ use chain piecing to go faster:
• placez sur chaque coin libre des 2 unités 1 des 2 petits carrés restant ; endroit contre endroit et coudre à 1/4 de pouces (6mm) de la ligne tracée sur la diagonale: le faire de chaque côté de la ligne:

•  trim along the line:
• coupez sur la ligne pour obtenir 2 "vols d'oies" pour chaque unité:

•  you know have 4 flying geese!
• vous avez donc réalisé 4 "vol d'oies " en 2 temps 3 mouvements!!bravo!

• you can trim them: I used my ruler and placed the 45° line on one of the triangle sides and alinged the 1/4 inch line on top of the corner to make sure I had 1/4 inch left to sew units together:

• when you sew units together, it is nice to press seams open to end up with less bulk!
• assemblez en cousant des colonnes de "vol d'oies" avec une marge de couture de 1/4 de pouce (6mm)  et en ouvrant les marges de couture pour un rendu plus plat et plus joli: (dos du quilt) :

•  et voilà! for my table runner top , I  assembled the units in oder to create a chevron pattern:
  sew in rows and then sew rows to create columns:
• vous pouvez créer un effet de chevrons comme sur mon chemin de table en assemblant un grand carré foncé avec des petits carrés clairs (et inversement) , ensuite amusez vous à associer en colonne les unités pour créer l'effet désiré!

 to change the size of your geese:
cut 1 square 6x6 and 4 squares 3 1/4 x3 1/4:
or cut  1 square 5X5 and 4 squares 2 3/4
etc...

 oh well! hope that helped the beginners!!
